TERRITORY:
Hived off from Abruzzo, its bigger Northern sibling,in 1963, Molise is a small, hilly region and constitutes a kind of cultural bridge from north to south. Termoli is a jumping-off point for the Isole Tremiti.
PLACES TO SEE:
Campobasso: Churches of San Bartolomeo and San Giorgio; Museo Sannitico.
Saepinum: the well-preserved Roman ruins.
Campitello Matese: a small winter and summer sports resort where you can hire mountain bikes or ski equipements.
Isernia: the remains of the most ancient settlement in Europe; Museo di Santa Maria delle Monache; Museo Paleontologico.
Pietrabbondante: the remains of a pre-roman village and a greek-style theatre.
REGIONAL CUISINES:
The lovers of cheese can’t miss to visit the Caseificio Perella Pasquale & Co. that produces since 1929 excellent fresh cheese: fior di latte and a pasta filata, famous for their softness and intense taste.
TRADITIONAL FESTIVITIES:
On the first sunday in July in Vastogirardi (near Isernia) to re-evoke the Annunciation ( Lady Day ) a little girl dressed in white, representing the Angel Gabriel, is fasten to a steel cable and slided down until she reaches a statue of theVirgin Mary. In Ferrazzano on 31th December groups of people with musical insruments go from house to house teasing those in the village who did something silly. This sort of joking is called maitunata.
